Energy Drinks Can Cause Insomnia and Fatigue in Your Teenager

These drinks also can interfere with a teenagers important sleep cycle. Too much caffeine can make it harder to fall asleep or nod off, even when youíre fatigued. Then you risk falling into a vicious cycle.

You have this nasty cycle of insomnia, then youíre using more of the drinks to wake up, said Richard Levine, a professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at Penn State University College of Medicine and chief of the division of eating disorders and adolescent medicine at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. If a teen  drinks an energy drink and then they canít sleep that night because of it, she or he might drink another the next day to help wake up. That drink can lead to difficulty sleeping the next night ó and so it goes.

So regular energy drink users might have difficulty kicking the habit of taking the drinks, repeating a nasty insomnia cycle.

Heart palpitations are also common and can be rapid, strong heartbeats that sometimes can be caused by excessive caffeine consumption. Too many stimulants can also cause irritability, nervousness, and higher blood pressure, and worst case, begin the onset of depression.
